Does Your Phone Need to Be Carrier-Unlocked?

🔓

Yes — even if your phone supports eSIM, it must be carrier-unlocked to install a travel eSIM from another provider. Phones bought directly from Apple, Google, or Samsung (unlocked) are always fine. Phones bought through a carrier (AT&T, Orange, Vodafone, etc.) may be locked — contact your carrier or check Settings to confirm.

⚠️ Regional variants: some Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei models sold in mainland China or Hong Kong do not include eSIM hardware, even if the international version does. If you bought your phone in China or HK, check your exact model variant before purchasing a travel eSIM.

Frequently Asked Questions about eSIM Phone Compatibility

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

The easiest way is to check directly in your phone’s settings:

  • iPhone — Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM
  • Android — Settings → Connections → SIM Manager

If you see an option to add an eSIM, your phone supports it. You can also use the search tool above — we’ve verified every model. Quick rule: all iPhones from XS (2018) and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM.

My phone is on the compatible list — why can’t I add an eSIM?

The most likely cause is a carrier lock. Even if your phone model supports eSIM, a locked phone will only accept eSIMs from your home carrier.

To check on iPhone: Settings → General → About — look for “SIM Lock: No SIM restrictions”. If it shows a carrier name, your phone is locked. Contact your carrier to unlock it — most carriers unlock for free after your contract period.

Can I use eSIM and my regular SIM at the same time?

Yes — most eSIM-compatible phones are Dual SIM (physical SIM + eSIM). In practice this means:

  • Your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS
  • Your travel eSIM handles data abroad

On iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile Data to choose which line handles data. No need to remove your home SIM.

How many eSIMs can I store on my phone?

Storage varies by device:

  • iPhone 13 and later — up to 8 stored eSIMs, 2 active simultaneously
  • iPhone XS to 12 — multiple stored, 1 active at a time
  • Android phones — typically 2 to 5 stored profiles depending on the model

Only one eSIM can be active at a time on most devices (iPhone 13+ is the exception).

Do Samsung phones support eSIM?

Yes — Samsung Galaxy S20 and later support eSIM. This covers:

  • Galaxy S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 series
  • Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip foldables from 2020 onwards
  • Galaxy A54 5G, A55 5G (mid-range)

⚠️ Exception: some Samsung models sold in South Korea and certain Chinese markets do not include eSIM — check your regional variant before buying.

Is eSIM available on budget or mid-range phones?

Increasingly yes. As of 2026, these mid-range models support eSIM:

  • Samsung Galaxy A54 5G, A55 5G, A56 5G
  • Google Pixel 6a, 7a, 8a, 9a (all Pixel ‘a’ models)
  • Motorola Moto G Power 5G

Entry-level budget phones under $200 typically do not include eSIM. When in doubt, use the search tool above to check your specific model.

Which phones do NOT support eSIM?

As a general rule, phones released before 2018 do not support eSIM. More recent exceptions include:

  • iPhones older than XS/XR (2018) — iPhone X, 8, 7 and earlier: no eSIM
  • Samsung Galaxy below S20 — S10, S9, Note 10 and earlier: no eSIM
  • Chinese/Hong Kong variants — some Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi models sold in mainland China or HK do not include eSIM even if the international version does
  • Budget Androids under ~$200 — most entry-level phones still use physical SIM only

If your phone isn’t in the list above, it likely doesn’t support eSIM yet. Use the search tool at the top of this page to check your exact model.

What are the disadvantages of eSIM?

eSIM is very convenient for travel, but a few limitations are worth knowing:

  • Carrier lock — a carrier-locked phone can’t use a travel eSIM, even if it supports eSIM technically
  • Phone switching is harder — with a physical SIM you just swap the card; with eSIM you need to transfer or re-download your profile
  • Not all countries are equal — eSIM works well in 200+ countries, but some remote destinations have limited eSIM provider coverage
  • Chinese/HK variants — some phone models sold in China or Hong Kong don’t include eSIM hardware at all

For travel, these are minor inconveniences. The benefits — instant activation, no physical SIM, keep your home number active — outweigh the downsides for most travelers.
